Initially split across several dozen settlements, the modern nation was reunified non-violently, if forcefully, through the political ambition of its most economically powerful city state. Contact and a subsequent rivalry with the neighboring Federation of Jut Fareed led to the rise of a centralized, authoritarian state, which legitimized its rule through managed elections, populist rhetoric and a foreign policy focused on the assertion of Retivan geopolitical influence. The rivalry between Retiva and Jut Fareed would define Antares politics up until the establishment of the Confederacy.
Commodity based economic growth has made Retiva especially vulnerable to market fluctuations and it was the implicit threat of sanctions that forced the nation, the last holdout, to confederate. Attempts to diversify have produced mixed results, with only its interstellar sector achieving a place of system-wide prominence.
Initially slow to establish orbital facilities, Retiva was nevertheless the first nation to land a spacecraft on a world in orbit around a different star within Antares. It’s successes in stellar travel and rivalry with Jut Fareed have also seen the rise of a growing industrial complex, with the potential for military application.
